Preventing Summer Learning Loss: Small Moments Make a Big Difference
Summer is a time for relaxation, family fun, and making memories. While children deserve a break from the structure of the school year, research has shown that some children can lose academic and language skills during extended breaks. The good news is that preventing summer learning loss doesn’t require expensive programs or hours of worksheets.
The best learning opportunities often happen during everyday activities.
Talking with your child while grocery shopping, reading a favorite book before bedtime, playing at the park, cooking together, or taking a family walk can all support language development. These simple interactions help children build vocabulary, strengthen listening skills, practice conversation, and develop critical thinking skills.
For children receiving speech-language therapy services, summer is an excellent time to continue practicing communication skills in natural environments. Focus on creating opportunities for your child to request, comment, answer questions, describe experiences, and engage in meaningful conversations throughout the day.
Here are three easy ways to support learning this summer:
• Read together for 15 minutes each day.
• Limit passive screen time and encourage interactive play.
• Talk, talk, talk! Narrate activities, ask questions, and encourage your child to share their thoughts.
Remember, learning doesn’t have to look like school. When families intentionally incorporate language-rich activities into daily routines, children continue to grow while enjoying all the fun that summer has to offer.
At Shout Speech & Language Therapy, we believe that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. We hope these simple strategies help your family build communication skills and confidence all summer long.
Have a safe, fun, and language-filled summer!
